Undergraduate course

ED50 Issues in K-12 American Education

This course discusses the origins and purposes of K-12 education in the United States. Several issues facing U.S. education today are critically examined alongside possible solutions.  The following topics are considered:

  • Educational inequality and opportunity gap
  • New standards and testing
  • School funding
  • International comparisons
  • Teacher preparation and professional development
  • School reform

Students learn to critically examine these key issues by reading relevant material, writing short commentaries and essays, watching documentaries, conducting a research project, and participating in discussions.

ED55 Knowing and Learning in Mathematics  and Science

This course introduces students to learning theories that inform the design of effective classroom instruction in mathematics and science. In addition, students work collaboratively with students from the Global Sustainability Minor to plan an interdisciplinary STEM unit for middle or high-school students on a sustainability topic.

Graduate courses

ED225 Learning, Development, and Culture

This course explore issues of learning and development through a  cultural lens.  The interplay between  “learning and culture” and “development and culture” is analyzed through  the discussion of relevant readings from both psychological and anthropological  research traditions.

ED289 The Use of Video in Educational Research

ED238 Research-Practice Partnerships

This course introduces research-practice partnerships as an approach to solve pervasive problems in education. Students learn about improvement science and design-based implementation research and begin a research-practice partnership project with practitioners from local school districts and education organizations.

 

In Winter 2018, we went on a fieldtrip at Crystal Cove State Park to meet with our research-practice partners at the Crystal Cove Conservancy.  So hard to concentrate with such beautiful weather and beach!
