Toshiki Tajima – winner of the Enrico Fermi Prize

On September 21, 2015, the Italian Physical Society will award the Enrico Fermi Prize to
Professor Toshiki Tajima, Deputy Director of IZEST at École polytechnique and Professor at UC Irvine.    The 2015 “Enrico Fermi” Prize of the Italian Physical Society has been jointly awarded to Toshiki TAJIMA and Diederik S. WIERSMA for their innovative and high-impact contributions to the study of phenomena dealing with the interaction of light with matter and particles. (In particular to: Toshiki TAJIMA for the invention of the laser-wakefield-acceleration technique which led to a large number of fundamental and interdisciplinary applications ranging from accelerator science to plasma physics and astrophysics Diederik S. WIERSMA for the first observation of Anderson localisation and of anomalous transport phenomena described by Lévy statistics in the framework of his highly original research on light propagation in disordered media).

Norman Rostoker Memorial Symposium
August 24 – 25, 2015, Fairmont Newport Beach Hotel
The Norman Rostoker Memorial Symposium honored the late Professor Norman Rostoker for his significant contributions to UC Irvine and to the field of nuclear fusion. As a visionary, entrepreneur, and a great mentor to many students, Professor Rostoker left a legacy that will impact the scientific community and humanity far into the future.

Collaboration research between UCI and KEK on “green” accelerator for the future (ILC) accepted.

April 2 (at the heel of April 1, i.e. real)  a notice arraived that the Japanese Government accepted and would fund the collaborative project between UCI and KEK High Energy Accelerator Laboratory in Japan to investigate a research to use wakefields to much reduce radioactivity and the size of the beam dump of extreme high energy beams in the future ILC (International Linear Collider). The idea was invented by Professor T. Tajima (UCI) and Professor A. Chao of Stanford in 2007. This research will test their idea if and how this method reduces the above issue by adopting the novel accelerating method of wakefields (that Prof. Tajima invented in 1979) in the reverse process of deceleration, a “Pryus of acceleration”.
