About Professor Alex Chan

Professor Alexandre Chan, PharmD, MPH, FCCP, FISOPP, BCPS, BCOP, APh is a Founding Chair and Professor in Clinical Pharmacy at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences. He is also an Oncology Pharmacist at the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, providing supportive care to patients undergoing anticancer treatment. He is also appointed as a Visiting Professor at the National Center Centre Singapore.
As a clinician scientist, Alex has published >280 full-length peer-reviewed manuscripts in a wide array of high impact cancer and pharmacy journals, and his research program has attracted >$6 million USD of competitive funding support from from the National Institute of Health/National Cancer Institute, National Medical Research Council Singapore, various foundations, and pharmaceutical companies.. He has over 15 years of research experience in cancer supportive care and survivorship issues, specifically in the areas of cancer-related cognitive impairment and cancer-related fatigue in patients and survivors. He has also conducted clinical trials evaluating the effectiveness of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. Alex provides editorial services for a number of journals. His serving an Associate Editor for the Journal of Oncology Pharmacy Practice, a Deputy Associate Editor for Supportive Care in Cancer, and an Editorial Board Member for Pharmacotherapy. He is also an Associate Editor for the textbook ‘Pharmacotherapy: A Pathophysiologic Approach’ (also known as the ‘Dipiro’ textbook).
Alex is a board-certified specialist in Pharmacotherapy and Oncology Pharmacy, as well as an Advanced Practice Pharmacist in the State of California. With a strong interest in narrowing health disparities and to advance cancer supportive care in low and middle income countries, Alex has organized, led and taught multiple workshops on oncology topics (oncology pharmacy, supportive care, and survivorship care) in many parts of the world, including Australia, Brazil, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Kenya, Macau, Malaysia, Nigeria, Singapore, Thailand and Turkey. He has also conducted program evaluations for numerous pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences education programs around the world. Currently, he is serving as a reviewer under the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) QOPI Certification Certification Program Steering Group.
Alex is an elected Fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy and the International Society of Oncology Pharmacy Practitioners (ISOPP). He is awarded the Steven M. Grunberg Memorial Award by Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) in 2015 and the Helen McKinnon Award by ISOPP in 2024. He is very active in professional organizations. He was a Past President of ISOPP and he is currently a Board Member of MASCC. He is also appointed on the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) Oncology Pharmacy Specialty Council for the 2023-2025 term, and currently serving as Vice-Chair.
