Rotating graduate student Leslie Heid was crowned the UCI Grad Slam Champion on March 4, 2021. The Barty Group wishes her the best of luck as she competes UC-wide on May 7, 2021!

Now that the Barty Research Group has their newly built lab space in the COSI Wing of UCI Beall Applied Innovations, we’re getting right to work putting our lab together.

Our first official lab project was to refurbish an old optical table donated to us from the Beckman Laser Institute, so we decided to commemorate the momentous occasion with a video. Enjoy!

The American Physical Society (APS) Conferences for Undergraduate Women in Physics (CUWiP) are three-day regional conferences held simultaneously throughout the United States and Canada for undergraduate physics and astronomy majors. UC Irvine was selected as a conference location in 2020 and a plethora of volunteers were needed to make the event a success, considering this was the largest session of CUWiP in the history of the conference, with over 300 attendees!

Barty Group graduate researcher Haytham Effarah and undergraduate researcher Lisset Ayala both volunteered at the conference. Lisset also served as a panelist for a discussion geared towards students intending to transfer from community college to a 4 year institution.

Using nothing but WordPress, BeaverBuilder, grit, and determination, the graduate students of the Barty Research Group have put together the group’s website. With project timelines being finalized, and the COSI lab space in Applied Innovations finally coming together, the Barty Research Group is excited to begin sharing their explorations and discovery!
