Prospective Ph.D. Students (recruiting for the 2026 application cycle)
Openings: I am recruiting Ph.D. students for the upcoming 2026 application cycle.
Outcomes: By the time you finish your Ph.D., I intend for you to have a deep understanding of climate science, atmospheric chemistry, energy system optimizations, and scientific data analysis. Some of this may depend on your interests (eg: we can dive deeper into atmospheric chemistry if that is the core area you are researching).
Application: You can apply for a Ph.D. in Earth System Science here.
Deadlines: Applications will be reviewed beginning December 1, and admission offers will be made on a rolling basis. Applicants are encouraged to apply by December 1 for the best chance of admission. The final deadline for applications is February 1.
Funding: UCI ESS Ph.D.’s are fully funded for 5 years. I also encourage you to apply to external fellowships, including the NSF GRFP, NASA FINESST, the Hertz Foundation, UCAR Next Gen Fellowship, and DOE CGSF. You can also check out pathways to science’s website for more fellowship opportunities and tips on applying to graduate school, or this John’s Hopkin’s resource. Getting your own fellowship can be an awesome boost to your career and research opportunities!
Contact: If you are interested in working with me, I encourage you to email me with the subject ‘Fall 2025 ESS PhD Applicant’. The best way to do this is to:
- Check out our Research, and UCI’s Earth System Science department to see if it will be a good fit!
- Read 1-2 papers of ours.
- Email me with:
- A few sentences on your background/career
- Specific reasons why you want to join our group
- A short summary of a research problem you’re interested in (don’t worry, you’re not tied to this, but it’s helpful to hear what you’re excited about and how you think!)
- Your CV (and/or transcript)
Check out this article for some advice on emailing a professor about a PhD.
Emailing me does not mean you have applied to UCI– you should still apply through the UC Irvine formal application!
Things I look for in an applicant:
- Relevant academic or research or work background.
- Ability to carry out a research project.
- Intellectual curiosity and interests that match with my group.
Postdocs (recruiting a postdoc, flexible start date 2025-2026)
Openings: I am hiring a postdoc to focus on one of three research tracks:
- Climate-economic modeling of uncertainty in climate damage
- Climate-energy system modeling of the role of climate uncertainty in the energy system
- Air pollution-energy system modeling of the impact of policy on air quality
