Below describes three broad research areas for my lab.
Last updated May 2023

Over 20 years, I have been focused on studying various aspects of cell biology and in particular calcium signaling at various spatial and temporal scales.
In my work, I have been involved with projects designing and implementing the use of novel cutting-edge imaging technologies and custom-built optical systems that enable STORM, DNA-PAINT, TIRFM, and light sheet imaging (including field synthesis/lattice light sheet).
My extensive experience spans a wide range of model platforms, such as metastasis models, IPSC-derived neurons, and microglia, further solidifying my expertise in this field. In addition to establishing a successful imaging core, I have collaborated on a DARPA-funded award with a local biotechnology company, working on an innovative wireless brain interface project that involved third-party verification and exploratory research.
As an educator, I have taught hands-on lab classes for graduate and undergraduate students, covering various cell biology techniques including fluorescence microscopy fundamentals, electrophysiology, and CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing
Over the past two years, I have been deeply involved in the development of state-of-the-art super-resolution imaging technologies, focusing on high-throughput imaging of synaptic proteins. This groundbreaking project is part of a larger, ambitious initiative called MODEL-AD, funded by a $50+ million NIH award in 2022 for a five-year research effort granted to a group of researchers at the University of California, Irvine (UCI).
Our goal is to create the next generation of animal models for Alzheimer’s disease, which will be invaluable for the broader scientific community. By advancing our understanding of this complex neurological condition, we aim to pave the way for more effective treatments and ultimately, improve the lives of millions affected by Alzheimer’s disease.
With over 20 years of cell biology experience under my belt, I have spent the last four years immersed in the innovative world of cellular agriculture. I have had the privilege of collaborating with over 25 startup companies in the CellAg space, providing due diligence services for investment firms and advising startups themselves on pitch decks.
My work has been recognized by the Good Food Institute, which awarded me a grant to further my research endeavors in this space. In my lab, I am currently working on generating stable cell lines that will serve as essential tools in the cultivated meat industry.
For those in need of due diligence consulting in the CellAg space or startup companies looking for feedback on pitch/technical decks, I offer my expertise through EdizaBio LLC and can be reached at drianfsmith@gmail.com.
