I completed my PhD in Social/Personality Psychology at the University of California, Riverside in 2005 and my post-doctoral studies at at the Preventive Medicine Research Institute in Sausalito, CA in 2007. Since arriving at UCI in 2007, I have won several awards for my teaching, including the Campus Village Professor of the Month (2009), the Social Ecology Student Association Professor of the Quarter (2010), the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Fostering Undergraduate Research in the School of Social Ecology (2012), the UCI Lecturer of the Year Award (2012), the UCI Yearbook/Senior Class Outstanding Professor in the School of Social Ecology (2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014). the Social Ecology Professor of the Year Award (2012, 2017, and 2018), the Social Ecology Dean’s Honoree for the Celebration of Teaching, and the UCI Professor of the Year Award (2024). In addition to my teaching activities, I am currently the Director of the Post-Baccalaureate Program in Psychology (http://psb.soceco.uci.edu/content/post-baccalaureate-program). I have previously served as the Director of Graduate Recruitment for my department (2009-2013), the Director of the Social Ecology Honors Program (2010-2013), the Director of the Social Ecology Excellence in Research Distinction (2011-2020).
My position at UCI is teaching-oriented, and I typically teach several large undergraduate courses, one small undergraduate writing seminar, and one graduate course per year; courses I have taught include Introduction to Psychology, Research Design/Research Methods, Naturalistic Field Research, Statistics, Social Psychology (Social Animal), Human Sexuality, Clinical Child Psychology, Social Relationships, Personality, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, Honors Seminar, Psychology Fundamentals C, Field Study, and Field Study Writing Seminar. Although I don’t typically serve as the primary advisor for any graduate students, I actively collaborate with undergraduate and post-bacc students on research projects (mentoring a few students each year), and students in my lab have gone on to enter graduate programs in developmental psychology, clinical psychology, social work, school psychology, international business, and dentistry.
