One of the graduate students in the lab, Ezra Sarmiento, took the first place spot for this year’s Science is Art competition at UCI. The micrograph Ezra submitted is a micrograph of geologic iron oxide titled Amidst Tekkadan: The Iron Roses taken using a FEI Magellan 400 XHR SEM. The “roses” themselves are particles of hematite which is the most stable form of iron oxide that measure approximately 10 microns wide. That’s about the thickness of a single strand of hair!
