“Night Market” (2007)

This Abuja market located in the Garki district, is a pop-up unofficial market that sells fresh cooked food, canned goods, and household supplies. The workers spend the day getting provisions and preparing to set up just before dusk. Children do their homework or help their family members when customers arrive. The blue, red, and candescent yellow light point to the improvised nature of generator-powered electricity, enabling the market to come alive out of deep shadow. The blurred effect represents the embodied hustle of life, even at the day’s end. For those returning home late from work, the dance of color and the aroma call them to stop along the side of the road. For those working, the night shift thrives in the face of precarity.
