Anthropology 139

Offered Winter Quarter

This course examines social realities, ethical action, and the imaginative possibilities of how life can be lived. Students will work collaboratively with the Southern California Library in Los Angeles. We will create an archival collection on the meanings and applications of “safety” in Los Angeles neighborhoods. Topics include policing, imprisonment, domestic violence, environment and health, and trauma. Moreover, the archival work will incorporate anti-oppression and critical awareness, especially anti-racism, emotional balance and meditative practices. The intent is to cultivate healing justice and empathetic care practices in order to explore what it means to be wisely together in community.
