Dismembered Communities: The Refugee Body Politics of Little Saigon

Abstract: This talk presents an excerpt from a new book by Long T. Bui. It speaks to “Little Saigon” refugee enclaves like the one in Orange County are engaged in a gendered and sexual “body politics,” and how their political activities resonate still with the broader history of the Vietnam War and geopolitics of the Cold War. Through examples of local protests, where members of the community are questioned over their loyalties to the nation, we discover the ongoing problems related to remembering the formally defunct state and country of South Vietnam in the diaspora.
