Prediabetes is a widespread health condition that affects more than 1 in 3 Americans. As you may know, fifty percent of Asian American adults have diabetes or prediabetes.  However, Asian Americans are understudied in diabetes and prediabetes research.

Prediabetes is a health condition where your blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough yet to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes. Prediabetes can lead to heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. Fortunately, prediabetes can often be reversed with lifestyle changes.

With support from the UCI Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute, we will test the impacts of a Fasting-Mimicking Diet (FMD), also known as Prolon®, on Asian Americans with prediabetes. FMD has been proven to have metabolic benefits in those with type 2 diabetes1,2 but has yet to be tested on Asian Americans with prediabetes. Through this pilot study, we will test the health benefits of FMD including changes in body weight, waist circumference, blood glucose level, blood pressure, and other measurements after the 5-day FMD program.

Participation in this pilot study includes following the 5-day FMD plan, which provides all your meals for five days ($175 value). Participants will meet with researchers before and after completion of the FMD program to complete health-related surveys, body measurements, blood pressure, and blood glucose assessment.  Participation not only provides an opportunity to learn more about diabetes and strategies for lowering the risk of diabetes through a healthy lifestyle, but also helps advance our mission towards healthier Asian American communities.
