Casey Vanderlip

Ph.D. Candidate

Casey is an MD/PhD candidate in the Medical Scientist Training Program at UCI and a graduate student within the Department of Neurobiology and Behavior. Before joining the Stark lab, Casey worked at the Salk Institute where he researched the mechanisms behind age-related cognitive decline in a translational animal model. In the Stark lab, he is interested in the role of hippocampal pattern separation in memory formation and the influence of age-related changes in the hippocampus and surrounding medial temporal lobe (MTL) structures. To accomplish this, Casey is interested in implementing novel behavioral tasks integrated with neuroimaging to understand how different subregions of the MTL make distinct contributions to memory formation. A primary goal of his research is to better understand regional vulnerability and why the MTL is susceptible to aging and Alzheimer’s disease. In his spare time, Casey enjoys golfing, trying new restaurants, and managing his fantasy football league.
