Poortata Lalwani
Postdoctoral Researcher
Poortata (Pia) Lalwani is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Neurobiology and Behavior at the University of California, Irvine. She received her Ph.D. in Psychology with a concentration in Cognition and Cognitive Neuroscience from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 2022. During her Ph.D., she investigated the role of GABA (the brain’s major inhibitory neurotransmitter) in age-related functional changes in the brain – namely neural distinctiveness and variability. Pia joined the lab in May 2022 and utilizes cognitive testing, fMRI, and MRS to study the neurochemical bases of individual differences in cognitive decline due to aging and disease. Her research is funded by the F99/K00 Award from National Institute on Aging (NIA). She loves to travel and cook in her free time.
