A Full Circle: Connecting Accelerators and Fusion

“I have a very vivid memory of our first encounter,” says Toshi Tajima, speaking of Professor Norman Rostoker.

“Upon my arrival at John Wayne Airport, I was greeted by a man wearing a Hawaiian shirt, sunglasses and sandals. I was just not expecting my professor to pick me up nor to be dressed so casually!”

Throughout the years, Tajima learned more than science from this world-renowned physicist.

“Norman Rostoker always wins,” he says. “Pool, ping pong, tennis, and – of course – science.”

Donna Strickland, University of Waterloo

Donna Strickland is a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Waterloo and is one of the recipients of the Nobel Prize in Physics 2018 for developing chirped pulse amplification with Gérard Mourou, her   PhD supervisor at the time. They published their Nobel-winning research in 1985 when Strickland was a PhD student at the University of Rochester. Together they paved the way towards the most intense laser pulses ever created. Their research is used today in industry and medicine — including lasik eye surgery, the  machining of small glass parts for use in cell phones, and compact laser accelerators.

Xueqing Yan, Peking University, was the 2019 Norman Rostoker Distinguished Lecturer.  His lecture focused on recent methods of ion acceleration by laser (such as Radiation Pressure Acceleration(RPA) and Coherent Acceleration of Ions by Laser (CAIL)) and how they are integrated with a magnet lattice to reliably deliver protons with superior beam qualities.  The achievements include: 1% energy spread of different energies and good uniformity as well as the precise adjustment of the laser accelerated proton beam in terms of energy, charge and diameter with repeatability and availability. One immediate application may be the Spread-Out Bragg Peak (SOBP) beam therapy of cancer. It elevates “laser acceleration” to “laser accelerators” since the invention of laser acceleration in 1979 by Tajima and Dawson.

July 7, 2017:
Today, Professor Claude Wendell Horton of the University of Texas at Austin, a member of Tri Alpha Energy Science Panel, was presented the Norman Rostoker Distinguished Visitorship Award at University of California, Irvine. Accompanying him was the Acting Dean of the Physical Sciences at UCI, Prof. Roger McWilliams, and the Norman Rostoker Chair Professor at UCI, Prof. Toshiki Tajima. Today was the last day of his week long first visit as the above function. He was the early student of Prof. Marshall Rosenbluth, the “Pope of Fusion”, and also studied under the tutelage of Prof. Norman Rostoker who were both professors of University of California, San Diego in the 1960’s.  Among other things, he has written two authoritative books on tokamak plasma transport in recent years

For the Norman Rostoker Distinguished Visitorship, Prof. Wendell Horton extended thanks to Jan Strudwick, Alison Lara, Prof. Toshiki Tajima, Prof. Zhihong Lin, Prof. Yong Xiao, Prof. Liu Chen, Calvin Lau, and GTC group of University of California, Irvine; Dr. Alec Necas, Dr. Peter Yushmanov, Dr. Dan Barnes, Dr. Michl Binderbauer, Dr. Hiroshi Gota, and Dr. Sean Dettrick of Tri Alpha Energy; and, of course, old mentors Prof. Norman Rostoker and Prof. Marshall Rosenbluth.
