Graduate Students

There are different ways a prospective graduate students can join the lab.

Via gateway program: once you get accepted in one of these programs, you complete a rotation in the lab during the first year and then join in the second year. Links to the applicable programs are provided here:

Cellular & Molecular Biosciences Program (CMB)

Interdepartmental Neuroscience Program (INP)

Via MCSB or Pharm Sci programs: once you are accepted into one of these programs (see links below) and complete a lab rotation, you join the lab while continuing to meet the other requirements for that program.

Mathematical Computational & System Biology Program (MCSB)

PhD in Pharmacological Sciences – UCI

Via MSTP program: this only applies to students who pursue a combined MD – PhD degree through this program. Students complete a rotation in the lab during the first two years of medical school (or sometimes at the beginning of the third year) and then can choose the lab. For more information visit:

UCI Medical Scientist Training Program

Direct admission: this applies to students with relevant research experience (e.g., completion of a research project as part of a Master’s degree program or a postbaccalaureate program). No rotations are involved in this type of admission. If you qualify, you will be instructed on how to apply directly through the graduate program in the department of Physiology & Biophysics. Contact Dr. Tombola for more information.
