Last week, our lab was lucky to host a group of young scientists: 8th grade girls participating in Tech Trek at UCI. Our PhD student, Caitlin Looby, taught them how to measure CO2 respiration from microbes. She explained how CO2 production can influence climate change, and why our lab studies it.

Adriana Romero, another PhD student in our lab, was a coordinator and dorm mom for the UCI Branch of Tech Trek.

Thanks to Caitlin and Adriana for mentoring our next generation of scientists!

Tech Trek is a science and math camp for girls who are about to enter the 8th grade. It is sponsored by AAUW. Our lab’s contribution was sponsored by NSF grants from the Division of Environmental Biology and the Division of Earth Sciences.
