Professor Dollar named as Kavli Fellow
Professor Dollar is now recognized as a 2022 Kavli Fellow, a joint endeavor by the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine and the Kavli Foundation. He presented his work on high intensity laser matter interactions at the 2022 Kavli Frontiers of Science U.S. Symposium. Attendance to the symposium is by invitation only, and attendees are selected from among award winners for early career scientists in the U.S. and abroad. Attendees include Sloan Fellows, Packard Fellows, MacArthur Genius Grantees, Pew Fellows, Searle Scholars, and Presidential Early Career Awardees for Scientists and Engineers. Since the inception of the program in 1989, over 5,000 distinguished young scientists have attended a Kavli symposium and are designated Kavli Fellows.
Professor Dollar appointed to NASEM committee
Professor Dollar has been appointed to be a member of the committee to author the Assessment of High Energy Density (HED) Physics by the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine. High energy density (HED) physics has critical applications in areas such as inertial confinement fusion and the stewardship of the nation’s nuclear weapons stockpile. Congress has requested that the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine conduct an assessment of HED physics research in the United States. The assessment will identify key challenges and science questions and propose ways to address them in the coming decade. The committee is composed of experts in the field.
Professor Dollar wins Tom Angell Mentorship Award
The Tom Angell Fellowship is awarded annually at the Office of Inclusive Excellence’s Mentoring for Achievement and Excellence event, this fellowship is intended to honor Tom Angell’s contributions as the UCI Graduate Counselor to graduate student wellness and retention.
Awards are open to graduate students, faculty, and postdoctoral scholars.
Award recipients demonstrate outstanding mentorship by going above and beyond their normal duties to create new opportunities to mentor UCI students.
Professor Dollar part of team for implementing adaptive education in California
Professor Dollar is a co-PI of a new initiative awarded $600,000 by the California Educational Learning Lab program. Administered by the Governor’s Office of Planning and Research, the California Education Learning Lab (“Learning Lab”) aims to increase learning outcomes and close equity and achievement gaps across California’s public higher education segments, particularly in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) disciplines. Along with PI Professor Peter Taborek and collaborators, the project, titled “Implementing and Testing Adaptive Learning Software for Introductory Physics, Chemistry and Engineering Classes,” will develop new adaptive material to improve the delivery of course content in a number of introductory STEM courses across engineering, physics, and chemistry. The full list of awardees for this year is located on this page.
