Housed in Global Languages and Cultures at the University of California, Irvine, the Intercultural Communication & VR Lab (ICC Lab)—also known as the VR Lab—serves as a hub for research, teaching, and collaboration at the intersection of immersive technology, language, and culture.
The lab is equipped with Meta Quest headsets, alongside two synchronous casting environments designed for interactive demonstrations, data collection, and co-located learning. These resources support projects that integrate virtual reality (VR), 3D modeling, and AI-assisted environments into language learning, intercultural communication, and global education.
The ICC VR Lab partners with faculty, students, and institutions worldwide to explore how immersive and generative technologies can promote accessibility, empathy, and multilingual engagement. Our current initiatives include research on VR-based language pedagogy, AI literacy in multilingual classrooms, and community storytelling through virtual environments.
By combining technological innovation with humanistic inquiry, the ICC VR Lab aims to reimagine how people connect, learn, and create across linguistic and cultural boundaries.
