Xu Lab
University of California, Irvine — Division of Cardiology

Echocardiography (cardiac ultrasound) is a portable, noninvasive imaging modality with an immense capacity to assess the heart’s function and structure. It can track blood flow throughout systole and diastole, monitor decrements in heart muscle thickening, and recreate heart structures in incredible three-dimensional detail.
The mission of the Xu lab is to explore echocardiography’s vast potential to personalize decision making for conditions such as structural heart disease, congestive heart failure, and stroke. We utilize advances in the field and collaborate closely with partners in the field of artificial intelligence. We are affiliated with the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine.
Current questions: 1) why do patients with tricuspid valve regurgitation fail to have survival benefit when their valves are percutaneously repaired? 2) how can we better guide athletes with cardiac abnormalities to safely but expeditiously return to athletic activity?
