UCI students interested in receiving BIO SCI 199 credits are highly encouraged to complete the following UCLC training courses before applying to the Kim Lab to enroll easily before the quarterly deadline, if admitted. Incomplete materials can result in a delay of a full quarter.
Required UCLC courses that can be completed before applying to our team include: 1) Laboratory Safety Fundamentals Certificate, 2) Hazardous Waste Certificate, 3) Responsible Conduct of Research Certificate, 4) Fire Safety, and 5) Annual Training Student, and 6) Privacy and Security Training HIPAA Healthcare.

What tasks do Research Assistants support with?
- Research Assistant (RA) will have the opportunity to engage in research with a cultural and clinical health psychology perspective.
- RA’s primary responsibilities will be to assist with all aspects of the research process including, but not limited to, literature reviews, data collection preparation, translations of study materials, participant recruitment, community outreach activities, and transcribing interview data.

What We Are Looking For
What qualities make an excellent research assistant?
- Research Assistants must be detail-oriented, conscientious, accountable, and communicate clearly verbally and in writing in a timely fashion.
- Motivated to learn about research, and possesses soft skills to work well with others in the lab and interact with participants and community partners.
- Attendance at regular meetings with Dr. Kim and the research team.
- Language fluency in Chinese (Mandarin/Cantonese), Korean, Vietnamese, Tagalog, or Japanese is strongly preferred.
- It is helpful to know about any experience with a reference manager, REDCap, qualitative/statistical analysis software, social media outreach, project management, and/or website building, but this is not a requirement.
Research Assistant Opportunities for Current Students
UCI Students
BIO SCI 199 or PUB HLTH 198/199 (undergraduate) course credit
PUB HLTH 298 (MPH graduate program) course credit
- If you are interested in receiving course credit, we ask for a commitment of at least 3 continuous quarters, more than 1 year preferred.
- We offer 3 units per quarter in Fall/Winter/Spring (9-12+ hours/week) or 2 units in Summer (12-16+ hours/week).
- Those who have successfully completed the 2-3 quarters of PUB HLTH 198/199/298 may discuss with Dr. Kim about applying to complete the culminating undergraduate (PUB HLTH 195) or graduate practicum (PUB HLTH 295) with our lab. Practicum will usually be available earliest in your 4th quarter in the lab.
- Grades will reflect the student’s reliability, commitment, quality of work, prompt and effective communication, and initiative with research.

SRIP volunteer intern (undergraduate)
- You may volunteer as an RA without course credit, 9-12+ hours/week, in the Student Research Internship Program. We ask for a commitment of at least 3 continuous quarters, more than 1 year preferred.
Volunteer (graduate level)
- MPH/PhD students may also volunteer as a research assistant, with approval from your primary advisor. We ask for a commitment of at least 3 continuous quarters, more than 1 year preferred.
- Medical students may volunteer as part of the ICTS MSRP program. Contact Dr. Kim ahead of time as this requires paperwork, if accepted.
- Medical residents may contact Dr. Kim directly with any specific interests and details about capacity.
non–UCI Students

- You may be a hybrid/remote RA volunteer in the Student Research Internship Program, 9-12+ hours/week. We ask for a minimum of 3 continuous quarters commitment, more than 1 year preferred.
