Research Projects

The focus of the laboratory is the neurophysiological analysis of emotional processing in humans’ brain. This is achieved using direct intracranial EEG recordings (electrocorticography) in patients implanted with subdural and depth electrodes for neurosurgical reasons. The direct recordings from human brains have provided key insights into the oscillatory mechanisms of emotional processing in the amygdala-hippocampal-orbitofrontal neural circuit. We show that in response to fearful faces in humans, the coupling between amygdala and hippocampus is predominately unidirectional with low frequency oscillations in amygdala modulating hippocampal high gamma activity. More recently, we showed low frequency phase dependent encoding of positive, negative and neutral valence in the orbitofrontal-amygdala circuit during processing of emotional facial expressions.
