Reach out if you are interested in joining the lab:
Postdoctoral researchers:
We are always looking for new postdoctoral researchers. However, we rarely post ads so it is recommended to reach out to Adam Martiny directly if you are interested. Typically, prospective postdocs develop fellowship applications (NSF, Simons, etc). However, if the project is good but ultimately not funded, we often have other sources of support.
Graduate students:
The lab accepts students through multiple grad programs, including Earth System Science, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Mathematical, Computational and Systems Biology, and Cellular and Molecular Biosciences. Most students reach out to the lab before applying to discuss possible projects but this is not a requirement. We typically accept a student in every cycle, so please consider applying.
UCI undergraduate students:
The lab accepts UCI undergraduate students for independent research projects. We typically accept 3-5 students every year from many different majors (BioSci, ESS, Public Health, Comp Sci., Engineering, etc). Most students join the lab at the beginning of the academic year but feel free to reach out at any time. If you do not get a response, email again or drop by the lab (we get a lot of emails and sometimes we miss responding).
An initial request should include a brief introduction to yourself, your academic progress (major, GPA, relevant classes), and finally, a clear articulation of why you want to join our lab specifically. We get many requests that just state ‘I am interested in doing research’. Such generic requests generally do not fare well. However, a clear description of why you want to work on our research nearly always elicits a positive response.
