Adam Martiny is a professor in both the Department of Earth System Science as well as Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. He got his Ph.D. from the Technical University of Denmark and subsequently did postdoctoral work at MIT with Sallie Chisholm. He has been a professor at UC Irvine since 2006. He is a coordinator the Bio-GO-SHIP project, a fellow of the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography, and the ASLO co-chair for the Ocean Sciences Meeting in 2024.

Ashton Bandy
Ph.D. Candidate in Earth System Science
Email: abandy@uci.edu
Ashton is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Department of Earth System Science. She has lived all over the world but always on the coast, and is trying to settle down in Southern California. She graduated from George Mason University in Virginia with a B.S. in Biology and then worked for the State of Hawaii doing aquatic natural resource management. Now her research is focused on the impact of pH variability on zooplankton in the Southern California Bight using metagenomic techniques. She is broadly interested in applied research that informs good marine policy. In her spare time she enjoys hanging out with friends at the beach, snorkeling, hiking, games of any kind, and snuggling her cats.
Stacy Suarez
Ph.D. Candidate in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
Email: ssuarezc@uci.edu
Stacy is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. She is from the small city of Yuma, AZ (known as the sunniest city in the world and the lettuce capital of the world). Stacy graduated from the University of Arizona with a B.S. in microbiology. She currently has two projects focusing on the evolution of antibiotic resistance genes in E. coli, specifically studying genes that can confer resistance when amplified. In her third project, she is studying the antibiotic resistance gene reservoir in coastal seawater (Newport Beach, CA) throughout the past ten years. When not in the lab, she enjoys many outdoor activities such as walks on the beach, snorkeling, visiting national parks, camping, biking, and hiking.
Melissa Brock
Ph.D. Candidate in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
Email: mlbrock@uci.edu
Melissa is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. She is from Pensacola, Florida, a small city on the Gulf Coast with beautiful white sand beaches and emerald waters. She graduated with a B.S. in Biology from the University of West Florida and an M.S. in Coastal Sciences from the University of Southern Mississippi. She is investigating links between microbial communities and biogeochemistry at different scales, ranging from small-scale interactions between viruses and host cells to large-scale ecological patterns across ocean basins. Outside of work, Melissa enjoys hanging out with her dog, hiking, and snorkeling.
Nicola Wiseman
Ph.D. Candidate (co-advised by K. Moore) in ESS
Email: wisemann@uci.edu
Nicola is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Earth System Science. She graduated with a B.S. in Environmental Science from the University of Rochester with high honors in research, where she completed her thesis estimating global oceanic methane emissions using neural network mapping. Her current research interests include using Earth System Models to investigate the impacts of phytoplankton nutrient utilization on global carbon cycling, as well as modeling the controls of ocean biogeochemistry on a changing climate. When away from her computer, she enjoys spending time with her cats, attending live music shows, and playing video games.
Adam Fagan
Ph.D. Candidate in Earth System Science
Email: afagan@uci.edu
Adam is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Earth System Science. He is leading a project to understand the regional variation in C:N:P ratios in the Atlantic, Pacific and now also Arctic Ocean. He has the lab record for total sea-days in a year (+100 in 2022).
Megan Sullivan
Ph.D. Candidate in ESS (co-advised by F. Primeau)
Email: meganrs@uci.edu
Megan is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Earth System Science. She graduated with a B.A. in Earth and Planetary Science from Johns Hopkins University in 2018. She is currently researching the global variability of phytoplankton stoichiometry and its impact on organic carbon export by combining models spanning a range of scales, including cellular-scale models of phytoplankton growth and global biogeochemical inverse models. When away from her computer, she enjoys sailing and spending time at the beach.
Skylar Gerace
Ph.D. Student in Earth System Science
Email: sgerace@uci.edu
Skylar’s broad interest is investigating the influence of biology on ocean deoxygenation. He is studying the oxygen demand per organic carbon for microbial respiration (ie. the respiration quotient), and how its spatial variance relates to plankton communities and climate warming. In 2020, Skylar received his B.S. in Biology from UCLA and moved to UCI to pursue a Ph.D. in Earth System Sciences. He loves to surf, fish, and play finger-style guitar.
Renne Harcourt
Ph.D. Student in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
Email: rhcourt@uci.edu
Renne is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. They are developing a method to quantify the elemental composition of individual plankton cells using ‘Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy’. This will enable them to understand how microbial community interactions affect the overall resource requirements of an ecosystem.
Amy Nuno
Ph.D. Student in Earth System Science
Email: amy.nuno@uci.edu
Amy is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Earth System Science. She graduated with a B.S. in Mathematics/Atmospheric and Oceanic Science from UCLA in 2020. She is interested in utilizing remote sensing products to quantify the spatio-temporal variability of nutrient stress in phytoplankton.
