About P.I.

Mei Kong, Ph.D.
meik1@uci.edu

Dr. Mei Kong is Professor with tenure in the Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry at University of California, Irvine. Dr. Kong studies the crosstalk between oncogenic signal transduction pathways with altered metabolism in cancer. Particularly, Dr. Kong focuses on the molecular mechanisms of metabolic stress response, particularly glucose and glutamine sensing pathways. Dr. Kong earned her Ph.D in 2003 from McGill University in Canada where she studied EGF signaling in primary hepatocytes and elucidated a novel regulatory mechanism to activate PI3-kinase pathway for EGF-induced DNA synthesis. In 2003, Dr. Kong joined the laboratory of Dr. Craig Thompson at the University of Pennsylvania where she studied protein phosphatase complexes in apoptosis, nutrient sensing and stress responses. In 2010, Dr. Kong joined the faculty at City of Hope Cancer Center and in 2018, she moved her laboratory to UC Irvine. Dr. Kong is a Pew Scholar, V Scholar in Cancer Research, Sidney Kimmel Scholar, Research Scholar from American Cancer Society and has been awarded a Innovative Research Grant from Stand up to Cancer.
