Dr. Park and co-Investigators, Dr. Karen Lindsay and Dr. Nathan Wong were awarded a pilot grant from the UCI Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute (SSIHI) for their project to examine the feasibility and preliminary effects of the Fasting-Mimicking Diet (FMD) in Asian Americans with prediabetes. Fifty percent of Asian Americans are diagnosed with diabetes or prediabetes, and studies have shown that prediabetes can be reversible with lifestyle modifications. The FMD, pioneered by Professor Valter Longo at USC, has been shown in multiple studies to help patients lose weight, decrease % body fat, and lower their blood glucose levels. However, representation of Asian Americans in those studies was low, and many Asian Americans with prediabetes are already at a normal weight. Thus, we want to test if FMD can also improve blood glucose levels in prediabetic Asian Americans. In collaboration with Dr. Longo and his team, our pilot study will test the feasibility and preliminary effects of FMD in this at-risk population.
