About

Who are we?

  • We are a group of University of California, Irvine – Department of Criminology, Law and Society professors, graduate students, and undergraduates with a diverse set of research interests. What brings us together is our interest in using quantitative data analysis, specifically in the areas of simulation modeling and policy evaluation.

What do we do?

  • We derive scientifically based solutions to common policy problems using several types of statistical models and experiments.
  • Our current work includes building unique simulation projection models that consider an organization’s specific management needs and situation.
  • Our specialization lies in quantitative computing, simulation modeling, and population projections. ISML utilizes advanced modeling techniques such as time series, survival regression, and ARIMA modeling, among other exciting statistical methods.

  • We form collaborative relationships with organizations in order to create simulation models of their systems for organizational and planning purposes.  Our discrete events simulation models (DES) can be used to predict arbitrary subpopulations as well as policy impact analyses.  Additionally, we employ Synthetic Control Group methods to evaluate the impact of criminal justice policies on crime rates and public health outcomes. These methods involve computationally intensive permutation testing that are achieved using the University of California’s High Performance Computing Cluster.

Who do we work with?

  • Our current clients include the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Custody Division, and the California Department of State Hospitals.
