The UCI PFAS Health Study Team is conducting a study to learn how drinking water that contains the chemicals PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, may affect the health of adults and children in Orange County, California. The study is part of a research cooperative agreement between the University of California, Irvine (UCI), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR). It is part of a national Multi-Site Health Study on PFAS. This study is important now because of increasing concerns about the potential health effects of PFAS exposure.
Seeking adults of all ages and children aged 4-17, of any race/ethnicity, to participate in this research study:
– People who lived in Anaheim, Garden Grove, Orange, or Yorba Linda, CA during any part of 2000 to 2019 may be eligible.
– Adults will receive up to $50 and children will receive up to $75 for participating in the study with a parent.
– Participants will be asked questions about their work and home, the water they drink, and their health. Participants do not have to consume tap water to be eligible. Participants will also give a blood and urine sample, and have body measurements (e.g., height, weight, waist and hip size, and blood pressure) made by health workers at UCI. For child participants, we will also ask about social behaviors, emotions, memory, and learning.
– Participants will find out what their PFAS blood levels are, and how they compare to others in the U.S.
This study will contribute to everyone’s understanding of nationwide exposures to PFAS and their potential effects on health.
