Open Positions

We are looking for Post-doctoral scientists and student researchers!

Like to work at UCI?

Post-doctoral Researcher opportunity:

A couple of post-doctoral researcher position is available in Kitazawa laboratory at University of California, Irvine. Kitazawa laboratory focuses on understanding the pathogenic role of genetic and environmental interactions in Alzheimer’s disease (AD), with particular interest in their impact on neuroinflammation. Currently, the lab is investigating the following research projects: 1) Identification of the neurotoxic mechanisms and cellular pathways responsible for neuronal death elicited by air pollution (PM0.1) exposure, and its toxic interactions with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) risk genes, such as APOE to better understand the gene x environment interactions in the pathogenesis of AD and related dementias, 2) Investigation of temporal SYK activation in the context of TREM2 and its signaling in microglial phenotypes and AD, and 3) Evaluation of novel genetically-engineered gut microbiome to treat early clinical symptoms of AD. All studies will utilize unique animal models of AD and/or human iPSC technology, coupled with unbiased single-cell RNA-seq, biochemical and histopathological analyses, and functional genomics. The post-doctoral researchers will be responsible for at least one study and perform in vivo and in vitro experiments under the supervision of Dr. Kitazawa. These studies will be done in highly collaborative manner with interdisciplinary team of investigators whose expertise in the next-generation sequencing and bioinformatics, iPSC technology and functional genomics, and inhalation and nanoparticle toxicology within UCI. Prior experience on animal models and/or human iPSCs is highly desirable.

Requirements: Ph.D. in neuroscience, toxicology, pharmacology or relevant field, with a desire to work independently within a collaborative team environment. We are seeking outstanding candidates who are highly motivated and interested in studying the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms of the gene x environment interactions in neurodegeneration and/or in evaluating novel therapeutic strategies for AD. Preference is given to candidates with strong research experience in neurodegeneration using animal models and/or human iPSCs. Competitive applicants should have at least one high-quality, first-author publication.

To apply: Please send an e-mail to Masashi Kitazawa (kitazawa@uci.edu)

Applicants will need to complete an online application form and upload the following materials:

  1. A cover letter that includes a description of current research, future plans for research and professional goals
  2. A curriculum vitae
  3. Name 3 individuals to request a letter of reference

Graduate student research opportunity:

If you are interested in pursuing Ph.D. or M.S. degree in the field of Neurotoxicology, with particular interest in environmental risk factors and Alzheimer’s disease, please feel free to contact Masashi Kitazawa for research opportunity in the lab.  I am accepting highly motivated graduate students through the Environmental Health Sciences (EHS) graduate program at UCI.

Undergraduate student research opportunity:

UCI Undergraduate students are welcome to join my laboratory to experience hands-on research in the laboratory.  The lab is accepting undergraduate student through Bio199. Students must maintain a good overall GPA (minimum 3.3), have strong motivation and passion towards science, and have a long-term commitment.  If you are interested, please contact me and provide the following information:

  1. unofficial transcript to prove good-standing GPA
  2. resume or c.v.
  3. a brief statement of your long-term goal and your wish to obtain through research experience
  4. your availability in the lab
