Research Interests
Fun!
I am a staff member and an aspiring Ph.D. student interested in the cognitive and neurological aspects of resilience from young adulthood to centenarians. My current position allows me to explore the life and cognitive capacity of older adults from multiple perspectives such as memory function, sleep, exercise and diet, and the clinically sensitive period before memory declination from several biological markers assessed with the state-of-the-art imaging modalities. Now my goal is to obtain a full-time graduate level researcher position in the field of psychology with the emphasis on cognitive neuroscience to examine how sensory experiences guide our perception of the world, how they influence decision making, and how perceptual changes occur with sensory deprivations as we age. Ultimately, I am interested in how perception changes our cognition and the various ways this relationship between perception and cognition may change our biology over time (from seconds to a lifetime).

Lab Research Projects

I contribute to the following research areas in the Translational Neuroscience Laboratory.

  • How memory and learning changes with normal aging compared to people who develop neurodegenerative disorders or memory disorders?
  • How does multi-sensory integration influences our navigation in the world?
  • How do certain types of sensory experiences guide our perception and influences our decision making?
  • How can we build mental resilience with cognitive training for older adults?
  • What neural basis account for our perceptual differences that influences our decision making capacity?
Outside of lab I stay active both in my mind and in terms of work. I am a content writer for Peak Mindful meditation company, I am a yoga instructor, and a full-time caretaker for my grandmother. I love being a cat mom and visiting family and friends in Europe. On my active days I climb mountains to waterfalls and lakes in the amazing National Parks we have nearby. My favorite indoor activity is to binge watch crime shows have a horror movie night with friends and eat as much popcorn as possible and we all jump at the same time. Occasionally when my artistic side comes to surface I play my piano or paint something.

What the lab means to me…
“To me the Yassa lab is like a huge family where our hunger for knowledge and love for science connects us no matter where we came from.”
