Thomas and Brian present the ongoing detonation research at the AIAA Region VI Conference hosted at UC Irvine.
Thomas presents a paper titled “Lean detonability of hydrogen-oxygen mixtures in narrow channels”.
Brian presents a paper titled “Propagation limits of cellular detonation in narrow channels”.
Rio presents a paper titled “Optimizing nanographene formation in natural gas pyrolysis via microwave plasma”.
Thomas and Spencer serve as mentors for the 2024 NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars (NCAS) program jointly hosted by Orange Coast College and South Western College, where they guided teams in building robots for a simulated NASA contract competition for the exploration of Mars. The teams also toured our research lab to share the opportunities available once they transfer to a four-year college. Thomas’ team won the competition with their excellent robot construction, teamwork, and competition presentation.
Xian presents two papers on detonation and participates in the Early Career Panel Discussion on the Future of Combustion Research.
Xian is named a Hellman Fellow among 10 UC Irvine faculty awardees during the academic year 2024-25. The university news article can be found here.

Xian presents an extended abstract titled “Probing Nitrogen Vibrational Relaxation in Hydrogen-Oxygen-Nitrogen Detonations Using Ozone”.
Thomas presents a poster on the detonation experimental facility at the 30th UCI Undergraduate Research Symposium and wins the poster presentation award for the Engineering and Technology category! Well done, Thomas!
Brian is selected to receive a 2023 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship! He proposed to study carbon nanoparticle dynamics within a chemically reactive environment.
Xian presents a paper based on his collaboration with Professor Sirignano, titled “Three-dimensional rotational flameLet (3D-RFL) with detailed chemistry and transport models”.
In addition, Xian attends and helps organize the 2023 Combustion Early Career Investigator Workshop.
Xian presents two papers based on his postdoctoral work:
