Congrats to doctoral candidate, Omobayo Salawu, on winning one of the Division of Environmental Chemistry (ENVR) of the American Chemical Society (ACS)’s 2023 Graduate Student Award. The award is given to promising graduate students in the environmental chemistry and engineering field.

Congrats to Environmental Chemistry & Technology Lab PhD student, Ziwei Han, on receiving a 2022/23 Henry Samueli Endowed Fellowship. The award recognizes the achievements of outstanding Civil & Environmental Engineering students who show exceptional potential for success. Hurray for Ziwei!

Congrats to Naomi (2nd year PhD student in the EC&T Lab) for passing her prelim examination on Friday, November 18th, 2022! Naomi’s PhD research will focus on treatment of media contaminated with PFAS.

Prof. Adeyemi Adeleye was recently awarded the 2022 Emerging Investigator Award by the Sustainable Nanotechnology Organization (SNO) during the 11th SNO Annual Conference at Austin, TX. The SNO Emerging Investigator designation gives international recognition to emerging scientists and engineers working in the area of sustainable nanotechnology. The Awardee must be within their first 10 years post Ph.D., and have an impactful body of independent work and publications in the area of sustainable nanotechnology. See more information here.

A study in which we investigated the suitability of five container materials for six PFAS (as individual and mixed solutions) has bee accepted for publication in the Journal of Hazardous Materials Advances. The study was led by Dr. Jenny Zenobio (former Postdoctoral Researcher) with contributions from Omobayo Salawu (PhD Candidate) and Ziwei Han (PhD Candidate). The paper is titled Adsorption of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) to containers.

Our collaborative article with Professor Cyren Rico’s group titled, “Impacts of perfluorooctanesulfonic acid on plant biometrics and grain metabolomics of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)“, has been accepted for publication in Journal of Hazardous Substances Advance. Congrats to Dr. Jenny Zenobio (former Postdoctoral Researcher) on her contribution to the article!

A manuscript on upcycling of shrimp waste, titled “Shrimp waste-derived porous carbon adsorbent: Performance, mechanism, and application of machine learning“, has been accepted for publication by Journal of Hazardous Materials. The study was led by Omobayo Salawu (PhD Candidate), with contributions by Ziwei Han (PhD Candidate). Congrats Bayo!

Our collaborative critical review article with researchers from the US Environmental Protection Agency titled, “Assessing the Environmental Effects Related to Quantum Dot Structure, Function, Synthesis and Exposure“, has been accepted for publication by Environmental Science: Nano. Congrats to Zahra Zahra (visiting researcher) and Omobayo Salawu (PhD Candidate) on their contributions to the article!

Congrats to Bayo for passing his qualifying examination on Thursday, November 18th, 2021! Bayo’s research focuses on the sources and fate of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in the sewerage system.
