Professor T. Tajima, a Member of IUPAP Commission 16 (Plasma Physics), promotes the liaison with the Ukrainian physicists. For example, Professor Vasyl Maslov, head of the Kharkov Institute of Physics and an academician of Ukrainian Academy of sciences, has been collaborating with him on laser wakefield acceleration in solid materials driven by X-rays. His paper on this was published recently in the special volume of Photonics that Dr. Tajima serves as the Volume Editor. However, on February 25, his Institute was bombarded by the Russian and was destroyed. They sought refuge in the institute basement from that bombardment, as shown in this photo.  He evenutally became a refugee in France, as his institute was totally destroyed.  I invited him for consideration of an Associate Membership at IUPAP C16, communicating this matter as well as our support of Ukrainian physicists in general with the Chair Dr. Sylvie Jacquemot of C16.  Our motions favorably resonated with the general announcement of IUPAP’s support of Ukrainian physicists by the President Michel Spiro.
